His architectures are landmarks, are extraordinary, futuristic and reminiscent of shells and organic curved structures from nature.

Santiago Calatrava Valls made a name for himself early on with spectacular bridges and buildings. For the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, for example, he constructed the Puente del Alamillo, the world’s first cable-stayed bridge without a tie-back. Like an oversized harp, the bridge stretches toward the sky and invites the wind to play.

For his hometown of Valencia, Calatrava has realized a total of nine structures, including the “City of Arts and Sciences” - an entirely new urban district. Futuristic, it contrasts the famous old town and has become another tourist magnet. Like giant nautilae that have emerged from the depths of the oceans, the architectural artworks lie on land, reflected in the surrounding water surfaces and inspiring from every perspective, changing their “face” at any time of day or night. They house, among other things, L’Oceanogràfic, Europe’s largest aquarium.

Worldwide, his signature buildings are a sign of futuristic aesthetic architecture, and his design sketches have led to collaborations with the New York City Ballet.
